 NICK FALDO

Born - 1957
Country - England

PLAYER PROFILE

MAJOR VICTORIES (6)
US Masters - 1989, 1990, 1996
British Open - 1987, 1990, 1992

The sight of Jack Nicklaus winning the US Masters on television proved to be the defining moment in his life. Until then, cycling was his main pursuit.

His mother organised a course of six lessons at Welwyn Garden City and within two years he had become an accomplished golfer. Won numerous pro tournaments, but decided to revamp his swing under the tutelage of David Leadbetter. The process was long and painstaking, but paid off as he won three Opens (1987-90-92) and three Masters titles (1989-90-96) with new swing. Produced ones of the great come-from-behind wins in 1996 Masters, beating Greg Norman after being six strokes behind going into the last day.

Won 27 European Tour titles, including three PGA Championships and three successive Irish Opens. Also won four regular tournaments in USA.

Became first player, in 1992, to win over £1 million in a season. Split from Leadbetter September 1998. Partnered David Carter to England's first victory in the World Cup of Golf in Auckland November 1998.

Split with long-time caddie, Fanny Sunesson in November 1999 after a ten-year partnership.
