ARNOLD PALMER

Born - 1929
Country - United States

PLAYER PROFILE

MAJOR VICTORIES (6)
US Masters - 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964
British Open - 1961, 1962
US Open - 1960

Arnie's late charge at Cherry Hill Country Country Club in Denver, Colorado sets a record for U.S. Open comebacks. At the 1960 U.S. Open, Palmer found himself in 15th place after three rounds. Spurred on by clubhouse talk that "The King" was too far back to catch the leaders, he went out and shot a 65 for a 280 total score. Palmer's seven-shot comeback is still the largest ever in U.S. Open history.

Beside the magnificent performance record, his magnetic personality and unfailing sense of kindness to everybody he comes in contact with have endeared him to millions throughout the world and led to the informal formation of the largest non-uniformed "military" organization in existence - Arnie's Army. He won the Masters four times, the 1960 U.S. Open in spectacular fashion and the British Open twice.

This great golfer amassed 92 championships in professional competition of national or international stature by the end of 1997. Sixty-one of the victories came on the U.S. PGA Tour starting with the 1955 Canadian Open. He has received virtually every national award in golf and after his stellar 1960 season both the Hickok Professional Athlete of the Year and Sport's Illustrated Sportsman of the Year trophies.

His popularity and success have grown with the tremendous golf boom in the latter half of the century to heights few ever anticipated. Certainly each contributed to the other, a fact given recognition when he was named "Athlete of the Decade" for the 1960's in a national Associated Press poll.
